I was a founding member of The Blue Heathens (I even came up with the name!), and I had a great time playing with them for two or three years. For this, our debut album, I dug into my bag of songs and contributed two vocal tunes (“Let’s Fall Out Of Love” and “Be Natural“) which our vocalist Hanne Peetermans did a great job on. I also wrote a fresh instrumental, “The Twice Nothing Rag” , on which bandleader and fine trumpeter Angel Perez takes the lead. I arranged all three of these tunes.
All good things come to an end, and I quit the band shortly after we did this record, to focus on my own projects. A young Cuban clarinet and sax player who I greatly respect, Reuben Vallé, took over where I left off. They are a great bunch and still very much my friends, and I’m sure that they have a bright road ahead. (The album cover is a drawing of the much missed Café Kiebooms where we played together many times.)
